Looking Back and Counting My Blessing!
15 Oct 2007
What ever you do, don't ask your children to answer this question. Some of the answers you get may not be exactly what you were thinking. They might think a unique child gift is something big and shinny, something they have just seen advertised during the Saturday morning cartoons, or even something that will cost you half of your next pay check! A unique child gift to them is usually the latest, greatest, most expensive, because my best friend has one - so I should have one too - item on the market today. Wow! Which of course as a parent, we all know it will only last until the next latest, greatest, item comes out on the market, (probably tomorrow).
As a child with 4 siblings, I didn’t think I ever received a unique child gift of any kind from my parents. I didn’t grow up getting the latest, greatest, most expensive things because there were just too many of us and we weren’t well off financially. We were blessed to have all of the necessities like a home, food on the table, running water, clothes on our backs, shoes on our feet, and electricity. As a child, I thought everyone was blessed with these things.
As an adult, I now realize I was very blessed as a child even with 4 siblings, I had more than enough. I also realized the most unique child gift we can give our children is quality time. I remember spending hours around my grandparent's table playing board games, card games, putting puzzles together, or just talking and laughing. It was the whole family just enjoying each others company. Looking back, the most unique child gift I have ever received is the quality time I spent around that table with my grandparents, parents, and siblings. Just looking back and counting my blessings.
