“Is Life Really Like a Box of Chocolates?”
Anchored in the Word of God:
13 Oct 2007

In the movie, “Forest Gump,” Forest says, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.” I’d like to believe that life is more like a tree and if our anchor is deep and strong we will grow and flourish abundantly. Unlike the box of chocolates, which are man made, and made only for consumption, we are created by God and He has given us an anchor to grow and flourish for His Kingdom.

Unlike a tree though, God has given us a choice which root system we will use for our anchor. Some trees have a root system that digs deep into the earth for their food and water. The further they dig, the stronger the anchor. Just as the Word of God is the anchor to our lives, the more we study and dig the stronger our anchor becomes.  As a tree grows upward the root becomes the most inner part of the trunk just as God fills us with His spirit and His spirit becomes our soul, our life line, our anchor, our steady stream of food and water.

When a storm comes, and it will come, the strong root of the tree keeps it from being destroyed. While its branches may sway a little from the storm, it will not be destroyed. By keeping ourselves anchored in the Word of God, the storms of life may sway our outer being, but is unable to destroy our spirit, our soul, our anchor.

As the well anchored tree grows, it branches out to become even stronger. Just as we branch out and share the love of Jesus with others. The tree continues to grow adding sprouts to its branches and dropping new seed into the ground to advance and flourish the forest.  As the Lord leads us to share the love of Jesus with others, we plant new seeds to advance the Kingdom of God. As His Kingdom advances and flourishes it becomes stronger, so when the storms of life come we are able to use His strength to stay anchored and hold steady. As long as we hold on to our anchor, He will hold on to us.

Other trees have a very different root system. This root system is closer to the surface and spreads in many different directions searching everywhere for food and water instead of going straight to the source.  As the roots branch off into different directions they become smaller, thinner and much easier to destroy, none of them holding on to any real substance for an anchor.

As the tree grows upward the trunk has no true anchor to keep it steady. When the storms come the tree sways, the branches break off, and eventually the trunk becomes weak and is destroyed because it had no true anchor. It will fall and die.

I believe we have a choice as to which root system we use for our anchor.  We can dig deep into the Word of God and have an anchor that holds.  Or, we can search in many different directions and "never know what we're going to get" inevitably being consumed by the storms that come.
